Goals and Objectives

The aim of “Pityos Proorismos” (Pityos Destination) is to promote and highlight the cultural heritage of Pityos, its history and contemporary life in order to develop mild and thematic tourism by transforming the settlement, as well as the wider area, into a destination.

In collaboration with public and private entities, entrepreneurs in primary production and service provision, as well as any resident who is interested and shares the same vision, we support and work towards a main goal: the visitors to engage in emotive experiences from the local history, cultural identity, tradition (intangible cultural heritage) and folklore, as well as from the daily lives of the village’s residents, thus to capture and seize features and characteristics that have remained unchanged to this day.

Specifically we aim to:

  • Manage the recently restored Genoese tower of Pityos and organise periodic exhibitions in it in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios.
  • Utilise the rich tradition of Homeric passage from Pityos by creating corresponding tourism services.
  • Organise, on a regular basis, tours to the key points of interest in Pityos, making it the first village in Chios with an emphasis on revealing its secrets to every visitor.
  • Intervene in the aesthetics of public space in Pityos, according to the directions of the architectural physiognomy of the settlement.
  • Highlight the numerous important walking routes around Pityos, ending at Oros and Amithounda, wonderful examples of the livestock heritage, the “plakomantres,” or the path in the footsteps of Drymakos, the first revolutionary of ancient Greece.
  • Create the Shelter of Chios Livestock, a museum space for the livestock tradition of Chios and the representation of the process of transhumance from the mountain peaks of northern Chios to the mild climate of the southern part of the island.
  • Organise, on an annual basis, the Livestock Festival, a multi-day event with various activities emphasising the promotion of modern livestock production in Chios.
  • Restore the Fekos mill, an excellent example of the architecture of the rural heritage of Pityos, by converting it into a museum space and exhibition area for the sale of local products.
  • Organize, in collaboration with the professionals of Pityos, actions of educational programs and provision of services to visitors with an emphasis on the gastronomic and livestock tradition of the area.
  • Create a special area for the protection and information about the basic traditional transport “vehicle” of traditional rural and pastoral life in Chios, the threatened little donkey.
  • Create the conditions and prerequisites for the establishment of mild accommodation infrastructure for a limited number of visitors, according to the principles of sustainable tourism development: We do not want “tourists” for whom we will set up a short-lived scenario but visitors seeking authentic experiences of recreation, culture, folklore, close to nature and the toil of the people.
  • Strengthen the bonds between Pityos and the PItyan population that lives around Greece and abroad.

The anticipated increase of visits to Pityos will awaken the local forces and will set the ultimate goal to create a developing tendency among more people to permanently live here; this is something  that can save the settlement from the severe decrease of population, a situation that unfortunately  it is now facing.
